Mystery Reader Vietnam Veteran Mr.Battiste!

Attention! This Mystery Reader gave us a military welcome! We were at full attention as we listened to this soldier's life achievements. We were honored to have a leader like Mr.Battiste read to us a poem by Langston Hughes. This poem and our Mystery Reader inspired us to achieve. We enjoyed it!

Our 1st parent Mystery Reader! Mrs. Payne

Mrs. Payne read an interview to us about Congresswoman Eleanor Norton. Norton was a leader during the Civil Rights Movement. This movement helped end segregation in our country. Despite the challenges, Eleanor Norton rose to be a leader for equality. Our mystery reader also encouraged us to stay focused on our paths.

Something New

Something New
By: Nathan Frazier
Have you had to go to a new school before? I have, like the time I had to go to Lucile Cherbonnier Elementary. I was so scared. Will they have good teachers? Good people? What people would I talk to? Know what I mean?
Come to see, my teachers are not that bad. My homeroom teacher, Mrs. Driscoll is nice and down to earth, and put together real good. She gave me good welcome. My other teacher, Mrs. Battiste has a good since of humor and also gave me a good welcome. After meeting my teacher, I was thinking about friends. Will I have some or would I just be alone this year? Come to find out, I would have a friend and more.
It’s good to have friends that like the same things as you. Just because I had some friends, did not mean that everybody liked me. Yes, they did still have people that did not like me. They might come up and say, “What’s up,” but that didn’t mean that we were friends. Then doors started to open up. I saw I was making better grades, and people now saw me for me. Starting something new can be a new beginning.

SOMETHING NEW
BY: KAYLIEN LEWIS

Hi my name is Kaylien. Have you ever been new at something? I have and it’s something that I wanted to do for the longest. This was to keep me in shape and I did it to become a new part of my life that I love.

The first thing I did was to pick the team I wanted to run for. So I picked Kennedy Heights, it’s located in Avondale. If you are coming across the tracks and you keep straight, the park is off to the left. They have a sign that says, KAWK, you turn on mission court and you are there.

The second I got to the park I was very scared my feelings would be hurt, and the coach said, every time I came to practice, run a lap. I was very shy for the others to see me run around to complete my lap. I was unhappy because I didn’t know any body. I went to run a lap again so I can pull myself together, be brave, and show them how I get things done.

I didn’t give up and I said, to my self, “Giving up is being a loser.” So, I worked very hard and came to practice every day at 5:00 p.m. on time. If a person was playing I didn’t give the coaches trouble.

Last but not least the girls that where there were bad. They had some nice ones, and when I ran my lap, some girls walked up to me and tried to boss me around. One of them said, “Run a lap for me and one for friend over there.” So I went by the girls that were nicer.
They had a girl named Aye, if I didn’t get something she broke it down for me. So if you are ever new at something, read my story and trust me you are going to want to o it over and over like me. Always remember to go for what you believe.

‘’Something New’’
By: Trevis Earls

Have you been new at something? I have, but I was not worried. When I got there the coach for baseball met us. He told me how to hit and serve. First, you serve the ball. Then it starts to get easy. Have it in one hand, then hit! If the ball comes to you hit it high!
My coach for baseball was there to help me. I got scared for a moment, but he was there to cheer me up. The ball came straight to me! I did not know what to do. My coach then told me to hit the ball. I hit the ball and my team got the point. It made me so happy that we won the game three times in a row.
After we won the first game I felt excited. I then bought myself a soda. The other team wanted a rematch. “I’m surprised!” I said to my coach. When we began, I was very nervous. In the middle, the score was tied 11 to 11. The game was over and we won.
How did they treat me? They treated me like a king. I was M.V.P for the game! It was fantastic to feel like a winner. Then we shook their hands. My coach told me to keep the good work up. Then at practice I did it again. I hope to be the best of the best. That’s why I practice a lot. It may be hard in the beginning to start something new, but it will change.

SOMETHING NEW
BY:MILNIKA CLINE
Have you ever been new at something? I’m pretty sure you have. Were you nervous, excited, or scared? Fear is something we all carry within ourselves. I remember when I was on the track team, excitement was wonderful, but the thought of losing was horrible. Being new at something is sometimes a beautiful thing, and is also scary when you don’t know what to expect.

When I ran track I was smaller than everyone, so that kind of made me uncomfortable. I had a variety of feelings. I was nervous, scared and excited. I had never felt so confused, because I was new. I had to get with the program. I was going to prove to them that I belonged on the team and that I could get with the flow, and I did.
Secondly, I knew I could do it, so I practiced hard and tried my best. On the track I kept running and didn’t stop. I set a goal. I didn’t allow anyone to stop me from reaching my goal.
Thirdly, some of the kids were mean, but I just ignored them and kept trying. Some of them helped me get with the program. Some of the kids were nice so we became friends. Being the new kid in the program has given me new friends and a family outside my home.

Finally, being new at any activity isn’t always a bad thing .Sometimes you may encounter a problem or two, but if you put your heart to the task, you will achieve your goals. So, stop being afraid and do something that you never done before. This will create a new cycle of life!!!

Something New

Have you ever been new to something? I was new on the majorette team. When I was first there, I felt a little hesitation. Some of the people helped me feel relaxed and calm. I became better and ready to start.
Since I was eight, I wanted to be on a majorette team. When I first tried out for the team I was anxious to get a uniform, and batons. At first my mother was worried because she thought I wouldn’t like it, but turns out I liked it a lot.
When I was there, my coach Ms. Jeannie explained everything to me. She also told me some of the girls’ names, but all I remembered was Anya, Maquel, and Brittany. They became my best friends. Some of the people treated me mean and others treated me nice.
After all that I have been through with the majorette team, I’m still on it, and love it!
